Hi Skip.
First let me tell you how great the website is. I have found so many
people who remember my parents and one remembers me as a little boy. We
moved to North Woodmere in 1958 so I only spent a month at PS 156.I drive
through Laurelton on occasion when in New York and it is still a very well kept
up town. I agree with the article in The New York Times to upgrade the
shops and Restaurants on Merrick road. I was looking for a Starbucks on
Merrick road, shocked that I could not find one. I live in Salt Lake City
now.
We lived at 130-28 229th street. We moved because the house was owned by
my grandmother who was getting sick and needed money for her care. My
parents also wanted their own house. Next door to us at 130-30 lived The Gold
Family. They had a daughter Beth. I used to play with her. I
have an old 8mm movie (now on dvd) of my birthday party in 1957 in the house in
Laurelton with Beth in the movie.
All I know is that The Gold's moved to The Riverdale section of The Bronx.
One of their sons became a doctor. I would love to find Beth. Is
there any help you can give me? She is not on the website but perhaps
people on the website have stayed in touch with her. Thank you in advance

HI Skip, Found this site once again after meeting with 4 other Laureltonite';s yesterday after 45 years. I'd like to update my listing- I;ve since married and moved and would love to find someone from long ago. I was Pam Raven, married and became Lippman and am now Pam Raven Lippman Laminsky. I currently reside in Port sT. Lucie Florida and Monroe Township NJ. I graduated Jackson in 64 and my mom was a teacher there after we graduated and was president of the PTA at one point. I was searching for a 1951 phone book for Laurelton, NY and came up with your
website. Perhaps you can help me. I am searching for the party below and have
tried asking several genealogy groups and several libraries for their help. I'm
getting nowhere - in fact, one library offered to do the research at $60. hour
or any part of the hour - way above my budget. I'm surprised by the lack of help
from the New Yorkers and glad that isn't the policy in other parts of the US or
even in other parts of New York state. Helen Drake was my 1st cousin once
removed and I believe she moved to NY as it says below and may have even died
there. She is the only key I have in my attempt to locate more relatives who
lived in New York at one time. I'd be so pleased if you or someone you know of
could help.

would have been about 64 at the time. There may or may not have been a Charles
Francis Drake, (son) born in Illinois about 1908 or Kathleen Anna Drake,
(daughter) born in Illinois about 1910 living with her. These are her two
children.

Hi Skip,
My parents moved into our home at 135-08 227th St two months before I was born
in 1952. We lived there until I graduated from Springfield Gardens High School
in 1970. After attending PS 156 from K-6th grade, I was in the transition class
at JH 59 when it turned from 7-9th grade to a 6-8 and was in the first 9th grade
at the new Springfield Gardens High School. Saturday mornings found me at the
Laurelton Theater watching the movie with the matron in the white coat and
flashlight keeping us in order. I’d then go to the pizza place on the corner of
227th and Merrick Rd to have a slice and a drink all for a quarter. Mrs.
Goldschmidt was my fifth and sixth grade teacher. I now live in Portland Oregon
and teach a second/third grade mixed age class of wonderfully diverse children-
I have ten languages in my classroom. I’ve been trying to find three friends
from my Laurelton days but have been unsuccessful. Does anyone know how I can
contact Arlene Gottesfeld, Mary Stabile, and Ellen Shaddock (sp)? Arlene and
Ellen lived in Laurelton and Mary lived in Rosedale. I know Mary lived in Mass
for a while and I think moved to the South. Arlene lived in San Antonio, TX for
many years but no longer lives there- I heard she might have returned to NY. The
last time I connected with Ellen she still lived in NY. I’ll be in NY in mid
January 2010 so I would love to be able to reconnect with them. Thanks for

times and we were to young to figure out that town would be home even though
most of us moved away. Remember Weekends at The Laurelton Movies......Our First
Library Cards at the Queens Public Library Laurelton Branch? Most of us had
friends that are like family and the relationships are still going strong all
these years later...........

The weekly class punch-ball game! The Friday afternoon free time to make models
and listen to records. These things don't happen anymore......But PS 156 made us

Skip, I happened upon your site by absolute pure accidental
serendipity. What a kick to spend several hours reading through all the
remembrances. I attended p.s. 176 from 1949-52. And then we moved to Phoenix due
to my mother’s arthritis. As I scrolled thru the posts and found some from alums
of 176, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I happened upon someone who listed my
home address as theirs from 1952… obviously her family bought the home from
mine! I emailed her but the post came back as an email address no longer
working. She did say in her post that she was packed and was going to be moving.
So, what a kick it would be to be able to connect with her. Her name is Shelley
Levine and the address was 128-15 236th Street.

Hello,
I grew up in Laurelton, on 217th and 131st ave from the mid 60's through the
late 80's and now live in Tampa Florida.
I attended St. Mary Madeline Catholic School until they shut their doors in
1974. My teachers was Mrs Lee in Kindergarden (at the Annex) Sister Shelia and
Mrs Fadin (sp?).
I was wondering if any other former St. Mary students remember a child named
Ricardo. I unfortunately can't recall his last name. He was an African American
boy of about 10 or 11 years old who delivered the evening paper on his bike.
Ricardo (Ricky) hung out with my older brothers, Mark and Timmy and of all of
their friends, Ricardo was the most tolorant of me. He was very patient for a
pesky kid sister who always wanted to hang around the big boys. My most vivid
memory of, Ricardo was of him sitting on his bike in front of the house hanging
onto our cyclone fence talking it up with the other neighborhood kids. He was
practically a fixture there, I can hardly rememeber a moment when he wasn't
sitting on that bike.
Unfortunately, around '72 or '73 Ricardo was struck by a car while delivering
his papers and died. That was when I learned the true meaning of what death was.
My 2nd grade class attended his funeral at St Mary's Church.
I thought I'd take a chance and see if anyone here remembers this child and if
so, do you recall his last name? Do you have any information or personal stories
on Ricky. I was only 6 when this happened and never knew his family or much of
any personal data about him. I recently became quite interested in learning more
about my friend.
Any information would be great.

I graduated from Andrew Jackson H.S. in 1961, JHS 59 in 1958 and attended P.S.
156 until we transferred to 59. Would love to find Leona Schulman and
Iris Granoff. Sorry, I do not know Iris's married name. Have not seen either of
them since the mid-60's. Last saw Iris when I danced with her at Dale
Goldstein (224th Street & 135th Ave) and Abby Wendroff's (Can't recall address)
wedding. Last saw Leona when I got out of the Marine Corps in 1966
and visited her and her then husband Tom (I think) O'Keefe in the garden
apartments behind Green Acres mall.
Steven Rachlis used to live across the street from me in the
1950's on 130th Avenue and 231st Street in Laurelton. His parents owned the very
1950's
style candy store/soda shop on the corner of Francis Lewis Boulevard and Merrick
Road. They sold it in the late sixties, when it became the "Busy
Bee." As teenagers, we all hung out and many of us worked part time there. Lot's
of good old time doo wop on the corner in front of the place. I have not
heard of or seen "Stevie" since the candy store was sold and the family moved
away.

There are not many names of people who graduated in 1963 - I moved to Florida
with my family just upon entering Andrew Jackson High School, never to hear or
see anyone again. Obviously at 13, no e-mail; cell phones, difficult to connect.
I am looking for Arlene Epstein and Carol Caldwell - not on the list they would
have gone to 176 - and then 147 with me.....Only names that I remember.

after our Laurelton days and then lost touch. I was able to find her again about
10 or 12 years ago. She was living in Brooksville, Florida. Before that, she was

Hi,
I am
still looking for Jean Schmalz. She lived on 121st Avenue between 233st street
and Francis Lewis Boulevard. I lived at 121-23 233rd Street in Laurelton. She
had a brother named Robert. She married at 17 divorced and re-married. I only
know her last name from her first marriage which was "Lash". No one that I have
contact with from Laurelton knows what happened to her. I would appreciate
hearing from anyone who might know something about her whereabouts.
By the way, the Laurelton Reunion on October 27, 2007 in NY was fabulous.
Reconnected with lots of old classmates and friends.

Recently I purchased a vintage (1960's) Gretsch Champagne Sparkle drumset from a gentleman in Seattle, WA. I'd like to fill in the numerous gaps on the history of these drums. While cleaning and polishing them, I noticed a name on one of the bottom drum heads, in very faded black marker "Steve Rachlis". Through a Google search of that name, I found your Laurelton website. If you know how to contact "Steve Rachlis" would you please either pass this along to him, or pass his contact info along to me? If this IS the same Steve Rachlis as the one whose name is on one of the drum heads, I'd guess he would probably know at least one good chunk of the drum set's history.
